End of 2010 Semester Break

Its the first post for the year 2011. Here are basically some of the events that I joined to kill time.

Event 1
Right after my last paper for the last semester for my Diploma, I spontaneously get to join my friends beach BBQ somewhere in Tanjung Bungah area.

The success of having this BBQ mainly depends on the weather. If it rains, say bye bye to the plan. Anyway, don't forget November and December was a raining season in Penang.

Another factor to be considered was the location to BBQ. It seems to be that it is quite difficult to find a public beach that is clean throughout the north of Penang. From birds eye view, you can see some of us travel from Tanjung Tokong up to Teluk Bahang down back to Tanjung Bungah before finally landing ourself in a beach next to Sunset Bistro.

Mass food production

Over here, I must stress something. Never let other people BBQ the food for you when that guy is busy chasing other "things". As a result of not obeying that law, he cooked food full of sand for us. =S

Me and two others polluting the sea =)

Event 2
Its been a while since me and my friends stayed back late in college to play games. I know its kinda weird when people usually goes cybercafe but we go College. Actually the Internet speed in college is quite fast plus the quiet location of it during the night which allows us to on loud loud the sounds and laugh out loud.

World of Warcraft

After going back at around 5am, the next day, I have to explain to my parents....
"I really didn't go clubbing.... I just go college play game nia!!!"

Event 3
I think I went Altera's Family Day. Actually. I don't have any family nor relatives working there. Its just that my former lecturer who is now working there invited us there to have a look around the building. Well anyway, I haven't enter to a factory before, so why not i make it my first =)

By the way, to all engineers out there, Altera is a good place to work. Starting pay of ur job as an IP engineer, RM4000..... O.O That's a lot man..

Not enough, no punch card system for employees of Altera; meaning you can choose to come to work or not to the office as long as you submit your product on time. This is called "Work from Home". Syioknya...

Still not enough??? Altera Cooperation provides a center for all their employees to release their stress whenever they are tired of working/ brainstorming. What facilities they provide???

A few complete setS of gym equipments

Still not enough??

How about a club house? A house full of leisure games such as:

Pool

Fusball

ASTRO HD TV with every packages

Two sets of Wii Console to play

and a few more such as Dart and board games like Chess, Monopoly, Uno, Chinese Chess and bla bla bla.... Well, I played Monopoly over there since I damn long didn't touch it.

Good Company to work in but I still want to join Agilent or Dell. Hahaha.. for some unknown reason.

Event 4
Hmm.. Haven't played badminton / exercise for a long time already. Symptoms of not plying long time ; cannot even serve for the first 3 times. Very sia suey...

At the moment, I don't think I can play any badminton as my knee seriously hurts. Must wear support each time I'm doing long walking. Got to buy new shuttlecocks soon. =(

Event 5
Had a one day trip to Pulau Jerejak.

Entrance from the Jetty to the Resort

Quite a nice trip especially when we get to sway at the hanging bridge and fly... LOL

Group photo before "shaking" at the bridge

Get to play the Flying Fox, Wall Climbing, Repelling and Cycling round the resort.

FAILED Spiderman

Well I guess that's what I had done for my semester break. Couldn't manage to get out of Malaysia as parents don't allow and I myself is already broke for the month.

It's kinda ridiculous doing only FIVE days activity for the past month right. Actually the rest of the days were like below: ~

me: *sleeping halfway..
Grandmother : Ah Guannnn!!!
me : Yes???
Grandmother : Come down and do this and do that...
me: Holiday leow la... Let me sleep a while.
Grandmother : !@#$%^
me : Ok Ok... Later I'll do for you
Grandmother : NOW!!!!
me: *Jumps out from the bed and run down

A busy semester break.

Grrr

Imagine your Desktop/Laptop is loaded with lots of software till when you move your mouse over the 'All Programs' on the Start menu and it showed you 3 full list of applications. Imagine your PC is updated with the latest updates on every software you installed or accumulated throughout the years you update through the Windows Update. Imagine all the games that you played and the tough levels that you had gone through and the saved games.

All the imagination above were shattered once you reformat your computer. At the moment, I can declare myself having phobia reformatting my PC as the whole reinstalling process took me a long period of time. Together with the sucky line in Malaysia, the time is extended.

Today.. Each time I shut down my computer, I have to wait 30 over updates to be installed. That's nothing to be so frustrating, it will auto shut down after it complete. The most frustrating part is after installing the updates it some updates auto restart the whole PC and leaved it on while I'm away. Good job Microsoft.

New Generation

People.. People... Do you know the Boeing 737-800 New Generation are arriving!!! I didn't know till I saw with my own eyes when it was landing in Penang International Airport.

Boeing 737-800

OK, a brief intro, MAS is replacing all their old 737-400 planes with this new one. It seems to be better as it is more fuel economic and further travel distance.

The classic 737-400. Spot the difference

Well anyway, a few days back while traveling on my lovely Rapid Penang, i spotted a plane landing. From far I recognize it as a MAS plane and start guessing its plane type and i saw the wing tip that can only make me think of is the Airbus 330. As it gets nearer, I got shock seeing the new 737 flew pass. I quickly took out my phone camera and position to snap the plane. When the plane was on my screen, I snap saw the plane freeze on my screen and I was smiling widely.

Until moments later i check back my phone memory all i got WAS

Optic Fibre

Have you seen an Optic Fibre cable before? Last Tuesday, two piece of those cable was put in front of me during lab session and I was wondering what it was till my classmate told me it was Optic Fibre.

As usual, the jungle boy got excited and all the Oo and Ah noises came out.

I believe my classmate is able to sense my curiosity on how to use it and that's where he shine his handphone flash inside the cable.

Looks like LED from top view

It works

You'll get this if you knows how an Optic Fibre works =)

Anyway, the Optic Fibre was used for transmission of signal (I think using Amplitude Shift Keying) which will on and off the LED.

!@#$%

The latest Air Asia's livery is very... doesn't look nice in short. It looks like one of the Malaysia Rice supplier. If not mistaken its the Beras Bernas.

The normal Red Air Asia flying in the sky is so much nicer....

Chia How's farewell Kerachut Trip

To spend the last few days with my secondary school friend before he gets himself drunk with Vodka in Russia, we had a trip to Pantai Kerachut and BBQ there.

Pantai Kerachut trademark

Although this is my fourth time going there but the after effect for not doing any exercise for the past five months leads me to a very tiring hike. Luckily the girls will always stop by once a while to take pictures and i get to rest or else i will mati sesak nafas.

Somehow upon reaching the beach, the first thing that was done by me and a few others was taking off the shirts and jump into the fresh water river without properly placing our things.

We tested a few floating methods such as form a circle together when you are in the water but it turns out that if one cannot catch up, the rest will follow him down.

Not long after that we had our BBQ lunches with lots of wrongly arranged sausages and fish balls.

Its then after that we went back to the river and played again and this time i got stung by JELLYFISH on my hand. I believe its a small one because I can't revenge on it after it stung me. I cannot find it =S

It is than I come to know a new plant introduced by Eric MC which is an antiseptic for jellyfish sting. Its called Laut Kang Kung .

Take note and remember how Laut Kang Kung looks like

You pluck the leaves and extract its fluids by tearing the leaves and press it out and apply it on the area that you have been stung. It works pretty well and you are back to normal after 15-30 minutes. After applying, it is recommended that you do not touch water to wash off the antiseptic and that is when my day playing in the water ended =(

So that is the time I start taking pictures with my Cybershot phone... Hehe...

I like the rock arrangement

Err... Jared what you doing there??

Human Pyramid (the 3 ppl at the base are screaming all the way)

Right after Kerachut, some of us including me went to Teluk Bahang Dam. It's my second time there and the dam is very small.

Sun is about to set in Teluk Bahang Dam

Right after that we head straight to a food court to have our dinner. I'm not sure what's the name of the food court but I called it the "3 Ringgit Food Court" due to the parking fee.

Pizza with lots of cheese toppings on it

My another friend, Ooi Tze Yang was facial bullying every small kids that is serving our table for some unknown reason.

Well the day ended with a tiring and painful day but I can say we definitely enjoyed to the max. Before I end this post let me introduce the Russian boy, Hong Chia Haw. Look for the only guy with a cap on his head below the picture.

PS : i kena sunburn dunno how many degree and thankfully this time I'm not mistaken as a volunteer ranger.

Home PCB

Starting onwards today, my house will not be a house anymore as it will be transform into a E&E factory!!! =D

All thanks to Lim Eng Wai, Jonathan Toh, Alan Looi, Tan May Xia, Eric MC (Monkey), Ooi Chu Kuan, Foo Yonn Weih, Ooi Hui Mei, Joel Lim, Tan Siew Poh, Teh Wen Ping and Marcus Lim. =)

It started with a call "Eh Jun Guan ah.. We left something outside your house." and they ambush my house.

Anyway... the something that was left outside my house was a desktop.

I believe it is donated by Wen Ping

And when I see usable unwanted computer, I'm very happy because I'm going to scraped everything in it and use it to upgrade my another super old desktop taken back from my mother's factory.

SDRAM

Lucky enough, the RAM used by wen ping is SDRAM which suites the PC slot but unfortunately, it turn out that the RAM is spoiled. therefore it is rejected =(

The next I cabut keluar is the Graphics Card. I have no chance to test the graphics card as my PC Mainboard is custom made/ custom solder so it is a bit sensitive to slight touch. Worst is that my AGP slot has already crack 0.0

Going to be my spare Graphics Card

So, to reject or not... hard to say. Another thing that catches my eye is the Sound Card. For a very long time my computer is a bisu computer. But now, I hope with this sound card, it can start talking to me. I Hope only..

Sound Card

Nevertheless, all the above does not relate to the title of this post 'PCB home'. The real PCB tools are below:

Developer

Acid to remove the copper in PCB

PCB driller signed by many people

After that I'm might find some time to modify the computer casing into UV light supply =D

Above all, thanks to the people mentioned.

???

Ever wonder what type of result you will get when typing your own name on a Google search? I got this idea after seeing so many people searching for our prime minister's name.

Well it ended up with a hilarious one for me... not as bad as I thought. One of the link catches my attention.

http://cn.linkedin.com/pub/jun-guan/8/89b/242

For some unknown reason I just keep laughing. I cannot imagine me becoming that guy. Oh by the way, I super duper DISLIKE programming.

So why not try google your own name and see what good/bad names you have =D

Tales of Valor

YES!!! Its been so long since I have played new games. I'm always stuck with the Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare 2 till Alan Looi introduce me the new strategy game Company of Heroes; Tales of Valor. I got interested of the game after watching the movie, Band of Brothers.

Overall, the game is more of a strategy game and it is unlike other strategy games like Generals or Red Alert. It is indeed a realistic game. When I say realistic, I do not mean the graphics although the graphic is not that bad but what i meant was the strategy used is more like a reality. Take an example, you can't use infantry armed with only machine guns to destroy a tank which therefore you upgrade the platoon to arm themselves with explosives to do the job. Unlike other games like Red Alert, with a machine gun, you can destroy a tank which make no sense.

Rangers taking cover in a combat to reduce damage compared to open space

By the way, the game is more on World War Two warfare. So expect to see ONLY WW2 technologies and no other high end weapon.

Updates

Its been a while i have been updating this blog. Nothing much happen in this life except a few that I'm going to mention.

Firstly, for the past 3 months I had been busy with my project "Ultrasonic Wind Speed Meter" which gives me lots of headache.

WTH is it???
It is an instrument that is used to measure the wind speed that is blowing using Ultrasonic Transducers/Sensors.

For what on earth people want to measure wind???
Cars measure the speed through the revolution per minute (RPM) of your wheel, planes measure speed through the air that is blowing towards them.

How does ultrasonic used to measure wind???
=D leave a comment on the chatbox if you are interested.

Circuit Testing done on Breadboard

Circuit constructed on a PCB

In this project, this is also my first time manual routing on EAGLE. (this sentence is just to satisfy myself)

The second event will be the Psychomotor and Psychometric test for MAS Cadet Pilot. I waited very long for a reply from MAS Human Resource and thank god they saw my profile.

I was invited to attend a selection test with them which will test your natural skills or I would say talent. My appointment was on Friday(lucky me no class on that day) at 9am and I have to be at the airport at 6am (not to mention the previous night I slept at 2.30am because of attending a PIC class for the project). Anyway, it was my first time going for a selection makes me damn freaking nervous and for a moment my blood are cold (I cannot absorb heat). I flew to Subang Airport where the "Big Event" location was just held opposite the airport. Honestly speaking the airport was way too small to be an International Airport. I wonder how it can handle the passengers last time.

My flight (I keep banging my head inside the cabin)

After finding my way to MAS complex B, I was stop by the security to get permission to enter and bla bla bla... I have to surrender my driving license and obtain a Visitor Pass.

Visitor Pass

After obtaining the pass, I fail to find the place I'm suppose to go and at that time it's still early; meaning nobody to ask where is the selection held but lucky walk and walk and walk till bump a MAS worker and ask for direction.

Upon reaching the destination, I found out that I'm the latest (paling lewat) to arrive but still in time for it. My session consist of 4 people and i forgotten all their names already. One from Sabah, two from Selangor and me myself from Penang. After the attendance was taken, me and the Sabah guy got insulted by asking us to measure our height on the marked wall. >.< Flight Training Center (place I took the test) looks small and about one and a half storey tall but inside it, it houses all the flight simulator that is own by MAS fleet. On my way to the physcomotor room, I walk pass all the simulators and the walls are hang with all the MAS current and retired fleet pictures.

B737-400 Simulator

Airbus 330-300 Flight Sim

Boeing 777-200ER Flight Sim

Nevertheless, I was close to achieving my dream but still far away. I pass the physcomotor test but failed the psychometric. I underestimated their test and did not revise anything about it. By the way, that Flight Training Center is a good place to wash your eyes for both guys and gals. Lots of "yeng" pilot walking up and down there in plain clothes but their tags and walking style are the one that isolates them but the Chinese pilots are a bit arrogant compared to others where they give you a friendly welcome and good luck wishes. The bad thing I find most of the pilots there is that they love to smoke. I indirectly became a passive smoker sitting near them. As for the guys, got Firefly and MAS air stewardess walking pass too. That time all FOUR pairs of eyes were eying them =D

Anyway, I vow to return to MAS again and make sure they take me in.

Oral Presentation

Its been a while i did not update this blog and my latest HIT was my final year project oral presentation where you have to present your going to be product and all the how, why and bla bla bla question about it.

Anyway, the person who's listening my presentation is a LEGEND; Meaning a person that cannot be "kang" easily.

I can only describe the situation in the room like a battlefield because you have to be careful with what you say, what you show and most importantly how much you know. If these three questions could not kill them, that's where they will start shooting you. The rate of fire is SHOOT till at least you get a bullet or a bomb and that is where you have to deviate as much as you can and return fire to give good impression to them.

Sadly, i got a bomb and was critically wounded.

Nice Stuffs

Read from a website that Dell is currently looking into phone industry.

Dell Thunder/Lightning Android

A slide phone with touch screen and also keypads for typing emails (touch screen too small for fat fingers to type). AND i like the design. Not too squarish =)

They are also coming out with Dell Flash and Smoke android.

Flash Android

I believe the name "Flash" has no relation with Adobe and its damn super slim (11mm thickness). The phone will brake into two it I'm the owner.

Smoke Android

Looks long (like a TV remote control) and hard to enter a pocket eh. Doesn't look nice =(

The difference among all the phones above compared to iPhone/BlackBerry is its Wifi connectivity and also its 3/4G speed. It claims to have a very high speed of internet access and has high storage of memory (Flash Android has up to 64gb of sdram) and not forgetting about its high processing speed. Google up the rest of it.

The next generation phone from DELL will be its phone with HD screen.

These phones are expected to be released by next year. So... Anybody willing to buy and let me play with it?
